How to host a league or tournament

Three steps, and only the first one is yours alone.

A court with a net ready to play

1. Set it up

Choose tennis or pickleball, singles or doubles, and a league or a tournament. Add the dates, where you play and any house rules.

2. Invite your players

Invite anyone here by their username, or share the event's link. Whoever opens it can ask to join, and you decide who gets in.

3. Play it out

Players arrange their matches and log the scores. Each result counts once both sides confirm it, and the standings move with it.

A league or a tournament

Pick the one that fits your group. Which should I choose?

LeagueA table over weeks, and nobody is knocked out. Players arrange their own matches with anyone else entered, with 3 points for a win. You choose how many matches count.
TournamentA draw, made for you when entries close, and somebody wins it: everyone plays everyone up to 8 players, and a knockout above that. Good for a single day or a weekend.

The organising, done for you

You run the event. We keep track of it.

Reminders go out for youLeague players get an email a week before, three days before, on the first day, and every week while it runs.
Standings that keep themselvesThe table or the draw updates as results are confirmed, for everyone in the event.
Results both sides agree onA score only counts once the other side confirms it, so nobody argues about the table.
Doubles, sortedPlayers pick their own partner, or you pair them up.
A badge of your ownUpload an image, and everyone who plays a match in your event earns it as a badge when it finishes.
Matches that countEvery confirmed result also moves each player's rating, the same as any other match.

Questions about hosting

How much does it cost to host a league or tournament?

Hosting is part of the Competitor membership: $24 a month or $240 a year, with a 7-day free trial for new members. Players you invite join with a free account. Recording a score needs a membership from $2 a month, and only one of the two players in a match needs one.

Can strangers join my event?

Only if you let them. Events you host are private: players get in when you invite them or when you accept their request. Anyone else who opens the link is asked to sign in, and sees only enough to ask to join.

How many players can take part?

Up to 256 in one event, or set a lower limit of your own.

Can I run doubles?

Yes. Choose singles or doubles when you set it up. In doubles, players pick their own partner or you pair them up, and a win counts for both players on the winning side.

How long does a league last?

As long as you choose. You set the start and end dates, and a league can keep taking entries after it starts, up to its last day. A tournament closes entries before its draw is made.

Do my players need the app?

No. Everything works on the website too, and the iPhone and Android apps open the same account.

Can I change things once it has started?

You can change the name, dates, details and player limit later, though never below the players already in. League or tournament is chosen once, when you set it up, and the sport and singles or doubles lock once the first match is recorded, so nobody's results change shape halfway through.

How do points and tiebreaks work?

Three points for a win and one for a draw, in both leagues and tournaments. How points work covers the tiebreaks, and How to run a small tournament helps you pick a format and plan court time.
